In the next few days it will be the 1 year anniversary of my sweet DeeDee's passing. Delilah was my Doberman Pinscher girl. I loved this dog more than I know how to express. And I miss her and always find her. Or maybe she finds me. Actually, she finds me. I'm sure of it. One of the tricks she knew was how to look for and find me. When someone gave her the command "Where is your mom? Go find your mom" ,DeeDee would go looking for me, nose me with her long wet snout, and then go back to the seeker of Gabby for her treat. On August 5th will be one year that she passed due to a genetic blood disorder.
As Divine Providence would have it, I caught up with them next to a store that sold bags of dog food. And as Divine Providence would further have it, the boy on the horse stopped to speak to some people he knew. So I found a trash can to throw away my raspado de pina, it would get in the way of what I wanted to do and it was almost gone anyway. I asked the girl from the shop for a kilo of dog food and then waited for what seemed liked the longest minute to exchange the kilo of food for 15 pesos. I finally got the food and gently walked close to her.
I remembered that Doberman's don't like to be approached forcefully, they like to check you out first. I placed the bag of food on the sidewalk and sat a few feet away. Later I would find out that her name is Gavilana, that she recently had pups, and that she got that name because she chases and sometimes eats baby gavilanes (she is a working dog after all, its in her nature). Gavilana approached the bag and ate. I didn't try to engage her, she is after all a hungry Doberman Pinscher. I just watched her eat. She does that thing Dee used to do, she chews from the side of her mouth. She looked up at me for a second and gathered her brow...I think she was saying "Thank you". I remembered Dee and thought: "you are just like her, color and all".
Wait. DeeDee was not a red Doberman. DeeDee was a black Doberman. Oppps. I forgot. DeeDee was black. Opps. Sorry DeeDee. But wait. Lexa is a red Doberman. Lexa is my brother's Doberman Pinscher. Lexa is my niece Doberman and she lived with me a few months when she was a baby. I love Lexa. She also reminds me of DeeDee..a crazier version of my quiet girl. I watched my Mexican Doberman friend eat and remembered DeeDee and Lexa..and I missed them both. I smiled because I can be wrapped in all this Doberman love because of DeeDee, because of my brother and because of the boy with the horse. And I think that the boy on the horse reminds me of the boy my brother was when he was in Mexico forever ago. And of all the vehicles my brother owns, I think its the horse the one that is missing...
On Love's command, DeeDee keeps finding me. And in loving memory of her, Gavilana ate.
